8 Signs Your May Be Eating Too Much Sugar

We like to think that we take all the credit for realizing certain flaws in our lives, but in many cases our bodies are the ones that do most of the realizing when something is not right. For example, if you’ve started putting on extra weight, or have developed a muffin top that just won’t budge.

You may have been the one to realize it, but in reality, it’s your body giving you a sign that something in your diet needs to be changed. Maybe it’s telling you that you need to quit consuming sugar.

The following are some of the top symptoms of a high sugar diet. If you’ve recognized some of these, then maybe it’s time to quit sugar and get yourself back on track.

Cravings: If you’re finding it hard to quit consuming sugar, don’t panic because you’re not alone. According to research, the desire to consume sugar is very similar to a drug addiction. Addiction is a reward system. When you consume sugar, your brain rewards you with instant pleasure.

In order to reduce your craving, you have to do so by eating foods that are not only healthy for you, but will keep you full for long periods of time. Studies have confirmed that the most filling foods are potatoes, lentils, bananas, and oats. In contrast, sugary foods such as ice cream, cookies and potato chips leave you wanting more.

Wrinkles: Another tell tale sign is if you begin to experience wrinkles on your skin. If you’re up there in age, then this may be hard to spot, but if you’re not, then it’s time to pay attention. Sugar affects collagen and elastin, which are two essential proteins that give strength to your skin. When you consume sugar, it jumpstarts a process called glycation, which is when glucose and fructose bond to other proteins.

When these two molecules make contact with collagen and elastin, it ages your skin. To keep your skin fresh and beautiful, you need to reduce sugar and use skin lotions and drink lots of water and tea.

Increase in Fat: Sugar is excess calories, and since it contains no protein or fiber, it doesn’t fill you up, so you keep eating it. Not only that, but it also triggers the release of insulin, a hormone that plays a major role in weight gain. When we consume sugar, our pancreas release insulin, which carries sugar to our organs so it can use it as energy. But the more sugar we consume, the more your body produces insulin.

Obviously the first key to losing that excess fat is to have a sugar-free diet. But it is also imperative that you incorporate daily exercise as well.

Toothaches: Generally when you have a toothache, it’s a direct sign of a cavity and you should probably go see your dentist. This occurs because the bacteria that lives in your mouth feeds off of sugar. These bacteria’s produce acids that breakdown the layers of your teeth and the enamel that protects them, which causes cavities.

This is not to say that other foods do not cause the same harm, because they do. Foods such as pasta and bread and some fruits and vegetables are just as much to blame. But the moral of the story here is that you need to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth and flossing every day.

Inflammation: A study has confirmed that daily consumption of beverages containing high-fructose content, such as soda and packaged orange juice, can contribute to gout in women.

The study confirmed that women who consume at least one high-fructose beverage per day, have a 95% chance of developing gout.

Gut Issues: We need our digestive system to be functioning properly. But sugar can prevent that from happening. Consuming fructose can contribute to a leaky guy – a condition that allows substances pass through the intestines into the bloodstream.  This can cause inflammation in the liver and has also been linked to colon, pancreas and liver cancer.

Don’t panic, there is a way to balance this out. It’s important that you have a balanced diet that contains a lot of fiber. Passionfruit, avocado and raspberries are great sources of fiber.
