Man Who Assaulted, Killed Child Is Publicly Executed in Yemen

0

In today’s world, we face the tragic reality of inexplicable, and unjust crimes against children. Some of the potential faces of our future are sadly the victims of inhumane crimes that are eliminating those of the next generation. Every child is born with the hope to live a life of fulfillment and to take away that opportunity is villainous. A man was publicly executed for assaulting and killing a child, taking away any future they were destined for.

Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, convicted for the sexual assault and murder of a three-year-old girl, was put on display in the Yemeni capital this summer, as a large crowd of onlookers flooded Tahrir Square to witness his execution. Laid down handcuffed on a blanket on the ground, the man awaited his fate after committing this malevolent crime.

Hundreds gathered to witness, as the judge read out his death sentence. People watched on from rooftops and perched up on telegraph poles, as the murderer of young Rana al-Matari endured five bullets from an assault rifle.

Upon the arrival of the convicted man, the crowd shouted “Allah is the greatest,” as they awaited his imminent execution. Reuters photographer Khaled Abdullah, who witnessed the scene, said that the place has turned to complete chaos as the killer was escorted to the middle of the square. Security was tight, as there were fears that a revenge attack could take place by armed tribesman related to the young victim.

Anorexic Woman Says Instagram Recovery Accounts Saved Her

0

Instagram has received a lot of criticism for the negative impact it has on young people’s mental health, but one woman is crediting the social media platform for helping her overcome a six-year battle with anorexia.

22-year-old Emelle Lewis spiraled into a dangerous eating disorder when she was only 15 years old. Despite desperate pleas from her family, Lewis only reached her recovery turning point after being influenced by other anorexia survivors on social media.

It was other people’s journeys that Lewis claims helped save her life. Now, after being in recovery for more than a year, the psychology student hopes to inspire others suffering from eating disorders by sharing her own journey.

Emelle Lewis, from Huddersfield, England, began to feel self-conscious about her body when she was in high school. When her friends began getting boyfriends and she didn’t, the destructive thoughts that she was “fat and ugly” began to plant themselves in her mind.

The 22-year-old began gradually eating less and less and eventually developed an unhealthy obsession with exercise. As she grew increasingly meager, Lewis refused to recognize her illness and would defend her perpetually shrinking frame to friends by saying she was vegan.

It came to the point where Lewis was living off of not much more than Weetabix, salad and rice cakes. This dismal diet was in addition to keeping herself feverishly active. Emelle would addictively do abdominal exercises and walk her dog to the point where she admits she wouldn’t even sit down until after 4 pm.

Emelle’s harrowing battle with anorexia reached the point where she only weighed 70 pounds and had to be hospitalized seven times. “I genuinely believed I could maintain at that weight and still live a fairly normal life,” Lewis admitted. “I didn’t want to get rid of my eating disorder.”

Your Living Christmas Tree Could Be Crawling With Bugs

0

“Oh, Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree, you’re filled lots of insects.” That isn’t exactly how the song goes but it could be the case. Turns out, you may just have bugs in your Christmas tree. Many enjoy the rich, tangible scent of authentic living Christmas trees in their home, however, there could be potential creepy-crawlies living inside the tree that you’re bringing inside your residence for the winter.

If you’re getting your tree off an authentic tree lot that specializes in selling the holidayconifers, chances are you’re going to be fine. If you’re heading into the woods to snag a tree of your own or buying some from a less-than-reputable dealer, you might want to double inspect or think twice about bringing it home for your next family Christmas.

Arguments between real trees and fake trees aside, you can’t deny how wonderful a real tree makes your home smell. However, before you stick one in the corner of your living room and cover it with tinsel, perhaps you want to inspect your tree for the following insects. Let’s take a look at how there may be bugs in real Christmas trees.

You can inspect your Christmas tree, by taking a large blank sheet of white paper and holding it under several areas of branches. Shake the branch vigorously. If a bunch of insects or any other creepy crawlies fall out, you might want to consider going outside and shaking off your tree before bringing it back into your house.

1) Aphids: These six-legged creatures normally stay dormant in the winter months, but bringing them inside your warm house will restart their spring cycle. The Cinara aphid is found balsam firs, Fraser firs, white fir, pines, and spruces. Fortunately, these creatures are host-specific meaning that they can only survive on eating on your tree.

2) Mites: There’s a wide variety of different mites that might travel inside your home along with your living Christmas tree. Many of them are indigenous to the white fir, the douglas fir, Fraser fir and spruce trees. For the most part, mites are relatively harmless, but they can become a nuisance if they spread away from your real Christmas tree.

3) Spider Mites: Not to be confused with actual spiders, spider mites can wreak havoc on your indoor and outdoor plants. They thrive in hot and dry environments. Although they are dormant during the winter months, bringing them inside can restart their cycle. Fortunately, these insects very rarely cling to conifer trees, but if they do invade, traditional over the counter pesticides are available to treat your plants.

Only People With Perfect Color Vision Can Read These 8 Words

Only people with perfect color vision can ace this color blindness test. The general agreement is that 8% of men and 0.5% of women worldwide have some type of color vision deficiency. Color vision depends on our eyes and brain working together to perceive different properties of light. According to the National Eye Institute, we see the natural and artificial light that illuminates our world as white, but it’s actually a mixture of colors that, perceived on their own, would span the visual spectrum from deep blue to deep red. You can see these many colors when rain separates sunlight into a rainbow or a glass prism separates white light into a multi-color band. The most common types of color blindness are inherited. They are the result of defects in the genes that contain instructions for making the photopigments found in cones.

The NEI says we can categorize color blindness into 3 types: red-green color blindness, blue-yellow color blindness, and complete color blindness. Red-green color blindness is the most common, which is the loss or limited function of the red cone (known as protan) or green cone (deutran) photopigments. Blue-yellow color blindness is rarer than red-green color blindness and it’s when the blue-cone (tritan) photopigments are either missing or have limited function. Complete color blindness (monochromacy) is straightforward; anyone with this color vision deficiency can’t experience any color at all. This can also affect the clearness of their vision.

Normally, eye care professionals use a color blindness test such as The Ishihara Color Test or the Cambridge Color Test to determine if someone has color vision deficiency. Many people with color vision deficiency don’t even know they have it! Sometimes, a situation will arise where they might realize their understanding and experience of color is different to those around them before they get tested. Here’s a quick color blindness test that only people with perfect color vision would be able to ace without hesitation! Share your results with your friends and compare what you see… and what you can’t!

Uber Driver Live Tweets Crazy Night With Girl Who Got Ghosted By Guy

0

Most interactions with our Uber drivers don’t go beyond some simple conversation, but one woman’s chauffeur ended up showing her the night of her life.

An unexpected friendship blossomed after a heartbroken Uber passenger revealed she’d been ghosted by a guy she had traveled miles away to see. Her driver did far more than just console her, she took her under her wing and made her trip well worth the plane ticket.

This rollercoaster of an evening went viral after the Uber driver live tweeted each highlight of their crazy night in a service that went way beyond five stars.

It’s easy to feel vulnerable when you travel somewhere alone, especially when the person you traveled to see bails on you. That’s exactly what happened to Leah when she made the trek from Texas to Florida for a guy who ended up not being worth the trip. Luckily, she ended up winning the Uber lottery when Victoria picked her up.

After Leah broke down and told Victoria about the dismal turn her vacation took, she was not ready to have Leah waste her remaining time in Florida alone. Victoria rallied up her friends to give her the Sunshine State welcome she deserved but didn’t get.

Victoria’s sympathy didn’t just spread to her group of friends, it ended up spreading to thousands of others online. The Uber driver with a heart of gold began updating her 30,000 followers on Leah’s story and their night out on the town.

The more Leah revealed about her ghosting long distance lover, the more Victoria and the Internet began to turn on this increasingly shady character. Are Florida State University football players not allowed to go to hotels?

This Is The Creator Of Bitcoin Set To Become The World’s First Trillionaire

0

Living in the modern digital world, it’s only fitting that the everyday things we have been using adapt accordingly. Money, for instance, is something that has generally stayed the same over the years in its physical form. We are now welcoming a new age of currency, and it’s set to take off. The cryptocurrency phenomenon known as Bitcoin is skyrocketing, with the creator set to become the world’s first trillionaire ever.

First introduced to the world in 2009, there was no telling exactly how this could end up, and how fast it would grow. The world’s first decentralized digital currency works without a central repository or single administrator, and transactions take place between users directly through cryptography. Today, over 100,000 merchants and vendors accept bitcoin as a method of payment.

Last month, the worth of a single bitcoin hit a milestone of $10,000, which had people scrambling to quickly invest. Today, it has already reached a remarkable $17,688.99 in US dollars. Valued at more than $297 billion on the market currently, the stock has risen an extraordinary 1,800 percent in this calendar year already. Having said that, the creator of this financial innovation is set to become the world’s first trillionaire, though their identity is still considered to be a mystery.

Satoshi Nakamoto, the supposed inventor of Bitcoin, is the masked man whose identity has yet to be revealed publicly. This is the name that first appeared on the original document proposal of the peer-to-peer electronic cash system, though the man himself has yet to be seen or identified physically. Projected to slide past the richest people on the planet, namely Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, the cryptocurrency creator is believed to already own one million bitcoins currently, which equates to $17 billion, and is only continuing to rise.

Survivors Reveal What It’s Really Like To Be In A Coma

0

There’s a lot that we still don’t understand about our brains. One of the biggest mysteries is why and how we experience “consciousness,” or the sense that we exist as a person. And some of the most useful insight into consciousness comes from people who have experienced near-death states or comas. Coma survivor stories give us a glimpse into the minds of people in comatose states, and a greater chance at understanding the conscious mind.

Science Alert

“I was in a coma for 5 weeks due to Meningococcal. I had A LOT of “dreams”, most that I can still remember pretty clearly. You can definitely take in what is being said from the people around you. I was 12 at the time (22 now), and my mother was reading Lord of the Rings to me while I was out. I had some pretty vivid LotR related dreams. Like eating some ice cubes under a bridge with Bilbo Baggins.” When I woke up, it felt like I’d been gone a long time, but without knowing how long.” (deleted)

A coma is a state deeper than sleep, where a person doesn’t respond to strong outside sensations (like pain) and doesn’t have a normal sleep/wake cycle. People in a coma can have varying degrees of consciousness, from “completely unconscious” to “aware of everything is happening around them.” Often, patients will float between the two states, briefly “waking” to some level of awareness.

“I was in a coma (medically induced, with full-body paralysis) for six weeks. There were a handful of times that I distinctly remember where I “woke up” in my head. What was the experience like? It sucked.” (TheOpus)

There are two kinds of coma: a “real coma” and a medically-induced coma. The “real coma” is the kind of coma you hear about in hospital soap operas, one where the person is comatose for reasons not under medical control (like illness or trauma). In a controlled coma, doctors “put the patient under” with a controlled dose of anesthetic to slow down blood flow to the brain. This usually only happens when the patient is experiencing life-threatening brain swelling, as slowing down blood flow to the brain helps decrease the swelling.

“I spent 8 days in a coma last year after a particularly traumatic surgery, my waking thoughts were wondering if I had died or made it. I couldn’t open my eyes and I was on a medical air mattress so I felt like I was floating, this lead me to think that I had died. I remember thinking it wasn’t so bad and wondering if my dad would come find me. Once I realized that I was still alive, I thought I had been injured fighting in a war and worried that my wife might not know I was still alive.” (tinman556)

Generally, a coma happens as the result of damage to one of two areas in the brain: the cerebral cortex, or the RAS. The cerebral cortex is the “outside” part of our brain, responsible for conscious thoughts and feelings. The RAS, on the other hand, is a part of our brain stem responsible for regulating our sleep/wake cycles. Comas can be caused by many different factors, but the two most common ones are drug poisoning and lack of oxygen to the brain. Drugs are especially likely to damage the RAS, leading directly to a comatose state.

Trump’s national security strategy will emphasize economic competitiveness

WASHINGTON — The national security strategy that President Trump will outline in a speech Monday will have an unprecedented focus on trade, border security and counter-terrorism, officials said Sunday.

The result will be a national security report to Congress that is as much an economic document as a defense strategy. But it will also have to balance competing objectives: Emphasizing economic competition with countries like China while also enlisting their help with security challenges like North Korea’s nuclear program.

Three senior administration officials briefed reporters on the strategy Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity to allow Trump to roll out the strategy in his speech Monday.

Among the officials responsible for drafting the strategy: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

The strategy will also define economic security as including the „national security innovation base” — a term coined by Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro to describe the technology and other intellectual property that gives the United States a strategic and economic advantage in the world.

Trump will describe Russia and China as „revisionist powers” intent on changing the global status quo by illegitimately seizing territory — Russia through its occupation of Crimea and China through its island-building in the South China Sea. China’s unique economic and military clout makes it what Trump will call a „strategic competitor,” aides said.

But that doesn’t mean that the United States shouldn’t cooperate with them when their interests align, Trump will argue. Just Sunday, Trump received the personal thanks of Russian President Vladimir Putin after the CIA gave the Russian security service information about a planned terrorist attack in St. Petersburg.

Under the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Department Reorganization Act of 1986, the president is required by law to submit a report on national security strategy to Congress every year. But previous presidents have treated the report with varying degrees of importance — President Barack Obama, for example, submitted the report only twice, in 2010 and 2015.

It was Obama’s 2015 strategy that coined the term „strategic patience” to describe his response to challenges like North Korea’s nuclear program. Trump has replaced „strategic patience” with his own buzzword: „Principled realism.”

By submitting the report his first year in office — and giving a speech to announce it — Trump is signalling that he’s personally invested in the strategy, aides said.

The strategy will be the first of a number of reports the Trump administration will roll out over the next few months on defense strategy, counter-terrorism, biodefense, nuclear posture and missile defense, aides said.

Mystery, controversy surround Toronto billionaire’s death

Toronto’s homicide police have taken over the investigation into the mysterious deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman, after an autopsy report revealed that the prominent Toronto couple died from ligature neck compression, police said. Time

Police in Toronto were conducting a homicide investigation Monday into the deaths of a Canadian billionaire and his wife after weekend autopsies revealed the couple died of strangulation.

The bodies of Barry Sherman, 75, and his wife Honey, 70, were found Friday in their home north of Toronto. The cause of death for both victims was „ligature neck compression,” police said in a statement.

Ligature neck compression refers to strangulation with a rope, wire or some other object that can be tied.

Barry Sherman founded the Canadian pharmaceutical giant Apotex, a generic drug maker with annual sales of more than $1 billion.

Police have released few details on the circumstances surrounding the deaths. A real estate agent who was helping the couple sell their multi-million dollar mansion found the bodies near an indoor pool, police said.

The deaths shocked the country and set off intense speculation about the tragedy and the couple, passionate philanthropists who donated to universities, hospitals and charities.

Police initially had said there was no sign of forced entry, no danger to the community and no suspect being sought. After rumors of a possible murder-suicide surfaced, the family issued a statement blasting police and demanding a „thorough, intensive and objective” criminal probe.

„We are shocked and think it’s irresponsible that police sources have reportedly advised the media of a theory which neither their family, their friends nor their colleagues believe to be true,” the statement said.

Condolences poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed sympathy „to their family and friends, and to everyone touched by their vision and spirit.”

Sherman founded Apotex in 1974 with two employees. In a statement, Apotex said Sherman grew the company from its “humble” roots to become a global pharmaceutical player, employing 6,000 people in 21 sites across Canada.

„Dr. Sherman gave his life to the singular purpose of our organization – innovating for patient affordability,” the statements said. „Patients around the world live healthier and more fulfilled lives thanks to his life’s work.”
